Mending a Broken Heart
There’s a special kind of way heartbreak sits in you when life is good.
You’re with someone else, and you know they were sculpted by your side when the mountains were formed. Happiness sits on your tongue like toffee, and you have no trouble swallowing it down. There is nothing wrong. But that won’t fix heartbreak.
Two years past, and you wonder why their voice sometimes goes off in your thoughts. Is it even their voice? Could you remember the sound? It tugs on your veins only because your heart says it is.
Life is the way it was always meant to be, and your mother runs her hands across your hair saying, “look how happy and healthy you are”. And you are. You have never once tried to argue with the wind for all you have been given.
But that won’t fix heartbreak.
You tell your friend crying into your shoulder that time will heal his pain. You know it is true, but oh, don’t you wish you knew how much. Perhaps the scars don’t fade, and for you the true healing comes from forgetting. So how many more years before you forget.
Life is good, and there’s a special way heartbreak settles to the left of your heart. It is nestled against your ribs, and you let it make a home there for now. You do not argue, and you do not demand, for happiness has already found its way to your front steps.
But that won’t fix heartbreak, and you haven’t found out yet what will.
