Artist Spotlight: Alan Chau
“My name is Alan, a fashion photographer based in Perth, Australia.
Throughout my photography journey I have found my style to have a nostalgic taste and a pretty casual vibe. The 80’s & 90’s era is my pick; the grainy rustic feels, retro colour to moody film cool tones. I just love the grittiness of everything and how expressive and provocative an unstructured image can be.
I find a woman’s beauty can be simple and uncomplicated. It’s the unrefined beauty that I like to work with and to find more of that authenticity without it being static. So for me keeping it real where less is more really expresses the aesthetic that I like.
I’ve always felt that each person I photograph has their own thing going on; a personality, a quirk or a side to them that other people seldom see so a lot of the time I just let them do whatever they like during a shoot. Sometimes, the model won’t see it themselves until the photos are in front of them and I guess that’s what makes photography interesting for me - to capture a raw glimpse of that person as they are, as natural as possible.”
